Brief background��略歴

After graduating from Fukuoka University of Education (1961, BEd.), I did my graduate work at the University of Hawaii under the US Government East-West Center grant, (1963-65, MA in TESL). Then I taught English as an instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University while studying as a doctoral student (1965-67, Professional Diploma). Back in Japan, I taught at Fukuoka University and the University of Maryland, Far East Division. Six years later, I resumed my doctoral study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1973-77, PhD in Linguistics), the latter half of which I was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago (1975-77). I returned to Japan and joined Waseda University as a professor of applied linguistics, where I�英語教育�� taught applied linguistics and supervised MA and PhD students at the School of Education until I retired in 2009. Meanwhile I was a Visiting Fellow at the University of London (1990-1991) and a Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii (1998-1999).

 

福岡教育大学卒業�昭�36年、教育学士�後、米国政府東西�センター給費生としてハワイ大学に留学�昭�38-40年、英語教育修士�。続いて、コロンビア大学教育学大学院に専任講師�英語教育�として赴任し、同時に博士課程に進学した�昭�40-42年、英語教育�プローマ)。帰国後、福岡大学およびメリーランド大学極東部で教�立った後、�度留学。ウィスコンシン大学で言語学を学ぶ�昭�48-52年、言語学博士�。その間、シカゴ大学で客員研究員を務めた�昭�50-52年�。帰国後�、早稲田大学で平�21の年定年退職まで応用言語学を教え、修士・博士課程�学生を�した。その間、ロンドン大学客員フェロー�平�2-3年�およ�ハワイ大学客員教授�平�10-11年�を務めた�

 

Academic activities�アカ��な活�

I am a lifelong member of LSA [the Linguistic Society of America], IAWE [the International Association for World Englishes] and PAAL [Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Linguistics]. I have served as a board member at IAWE, AILA [Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée], Asia TEFL [the Asian Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language], PAAL among others. In Japan, I have been on the board at JACET [the Japan Association of College English Teachers], JAFAE [the Japanese Association for Asian English] and the Society for Gender Studies in Japanese among others. Presently I am the founding president of JATLaC [the Japan Association of Teaching Language and Culture], advisor of JACET and PAAL and a board member of the Japan Society for Global System and Ethics. Nonacademically, I serve as a member of the Ethics Committee at Tochigi National Medical Center.
