MY RESEARCH PROFILE／研究分野概要

My research of the past 30 years has been on discourse analysis of English and Japanese from

sociolinguistic perspectives. My PhD graduate work was on the anaphoric phenomena beyond

the sentence level of English and Japanese. Common in my work were concepts such as linguistic

and nonlinguistic antecedents, anaphoric scope, thematization, disambiguation, and salience.

Having started my research in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), all studies were

meat to apply to TEFL.

過去30年間、社会言語学的視点から日英語の談話分析をしてきた。博士課程での研究は日英語の談話

レベルの照応現象で、言語的・非言語的先行概念、照応領域、話題化、非曖昧化、卓立などの概念を対象

とした。英語教育から出発しているので、すべての研究は英語教育への応用を目的としている。

In recent years, I have focused more on English as an International Language (EIL). Applied

Linguists, who inspired me into the EIL studies, include Henry G. Widdowson, Braj B. Kachru,

Barbara Seidlhofer, and Jennifer Jenkins among others who are concerned in world Englishes

and ELF (English as a Lingua Franca). My recent publications deal with ‘nativeness,’ including

nativization of nonnative speakers of English; development of wider regional standard Englishes

such as Euro-Englishes and Asian Englishes, which have clarity and international intelligibility

but retain locality rather than conformity to Anglo-American English; formal and semantic changes

from ‘marked’ to ‘unmarked’ (irregular to regular, specific to general) in English; and the pedagogical

application of global Englishes—from the general (culture-general denominator) to the specific

(culture-specific numerator).

近年は、EIL（国際語としての英語）に研究の焦点を当ててきている。影響を受けた応用言語学者はヘンリー・

ウィドウソン、ブラジ・カチュル、バーバラ・サイデルホファー、ジェニファー・ジェンキンズなどの「世界英語」および

「共通語としての英語」の研究者である。最近の研究論文等は英語非母語話者の母語話者化を含む「母語」の

概念、英米語に同化するのではなく、地域性を保ちながらも、国際的理解度が高いユーロ英語やアジア英語など

の広域標準英語の発達、英語に見られる「有標」から「無標」、即ち、不規則から規則、特殊から一般への文法的・

意味的変化などに取り組んでいる。このような国際化した英語の英語教育への応用としては、文化普遍的一般

英語（分母）から文化個別的特殊英語（分子）への順序を踏むのが効果的であると考えている。
